Hi,
It could be a few issues causing your device to overheat.
Remember that if you are using resource heavy apps such as gaming or Facebook then you should expect a certain amount of excess heat.
Has it just started to happen or it been a issue since you first bought it?
If it's just started to happen then.. Have you just received a OS update (4.4 to 5.1 etc).
If yes then I would advise that you do a factory reset. This should be done as standard practice whenever your device receives a update. (it clears all the old OS settings and temporary files and forces apps to update to their newest version - re optimises your device).
If that doesn't solve it then I would check out the last apps you installed. If for instance you downloaded Facebook and then noticed overheating problem, then it's a safe bet that's part of the problem.
You can check the temperature of the battery by installing a third party app
You can also boot your device into "safe Mode" this runs your phone without any of the apps that you have installed. If it's not heating up then you know a app is most likely the cause.
(please ask in comments if you need specific instructions on accessing safe mode).
You can clear the Cached app data which may fix it. Settings - Connections -Storage - Cached Data
You can also clear specific app data if you think said app is causing the problem.
Open settings - Applications - Application Manager - Downloaded
Here you will see a complete list of apps you have downloaded, find the app you think is causing the problem.
Here you can clear the Cached Data and the App data (clearing the app data will reset the apps saved data including logins).
If you are still having problems then a factory reset may help (if it hasn't already been done).
You should also check the actual battery, how old is it? If your able to take it out, then place it on the table and try to spin it. If it's able to spin freely then there is a bulge in middle. This means that the battery is malfunctioning. You need to replace it immediately.
If you can't access the battery then I would take it back under warranty for the battery to be replaced.
Remember that certain phone cases can contribute to overheating, remove the case to help heat escape.
As I said your phone may get hot with excess usage this is normal as long as it returns to normal operating temperature when you close the apps.
The guidelines for normal temperature parameters are;

The guidelines for normal temperature parameters are;
- Operating temp: 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit
- Storing temp (turned off): -4 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit
- Humidity: 5 to 95 percent, non-condensing
- Maximum altitude: 10,000 feet
Tips:
- Consider using bluetooth earpieces or earbuds to place urgent calls, instead of taking your phone out of your pocket in cold weather.
- Don’t leave your phone in the car, not even the glove box. Not only could it get broken into, but temps often run very hot or cold, depending on the climate.
- Don’t leave your phone baking in direct sunlight, or use them for heavy duty tasks while in direct sunlight, like navigation or playing a processor-/graphics-inten
sive game.
