In my opinion, you probably can't get the quality you want as long as you are limiting yourself to local trails. It means the budget is likely too small or you have to do it yourself.
I've never done any GPS coding, but I find it difficult to imagine that there isn't a general solution to your problem. If you start by focusing on a way to make it easy to publish GPS track data, then you will be building a product that anyone can use to publish any track data they collect. Ideally, of course, you will put some attention into making a nice experience for the people using the maps.
For the last few years, the app market has exploded. There are billions of app downloads on the Apple store because of the increasing craze of the app amongst the users. Develop an app is just like constructing a house.
Nobody can answer the question – “How much will it cost to build a home?”
The cost would depend on the facilities it has, materials to be used, the size of the house, architect, fittings and many more factors.
Most of the companies can provide the ballpark estimates to develop apps for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows, etc. For getting an estimate on the app development cost, you should discuss your requirements and get expert ideas.
But if we still have to hazard a guess: If you are launching a prototype or hobby project – Spend between $5000 -25000
Here are some highlights of what the client should keep in mind while evaluating cost:
· Commit to the project! You probably won’t build the next Google, Waze or Nokia with just a tiny bit of cash. Starting small and “just trying out things” can prove more expensive than you’ve thought.
· Experiment, build things in chunks, validate your knowledge, apply the Lean Startup principles!
· Take one step at a time: find out who your audience is (iOS, Android) and start by building each platform slowly. It will be cheaper to make changes along the way.
· Better design, speed, scalability requires exponential effort. You can have great design/UX in a few days or weeks, but to do that twice as good it might take 10 times the effort and cost.
· Keep your expectations realistic! It will be pretty hard to build something better than Google (or any other Internet giant), when they have thousands of engineers involved and you only work with 1-2 developers.
