Why don't the iPhones support external SD cards?

Primarily,  Apple is all about controlling their
market.

The opinion is that if the user really needed more storage they should have payed Apple for an iPhone or iPad with more memory installed.   Otherwise they should be using Apple cloud storage.

For both system integrity and profit reasons they don't want to allow any third party to alter their devices.  If they hadn't seen so much push back from PC users,  they wouldn't allow uses to add aftermarket memory, storage or otherwise modify their systems.

They still have the advantage in the other devices.

Every opening in the device and every physical connection rather than a hardware (primarily soldiered) connection is a possible point of failure.  Aside from dirt and moisture getting in, an SD slot is another thing that can get damaged.   It is one of the many reasons they avoid user replaceable batteries.

Apple might want you to scrap your current phone as soon as the new one comes out (and renew your AppleCare contract), but they don't really want you to bring your phone in to get fixed any more than absolutely necessary.

The news about future phones losing the headphone jack is probably much more to eliminate another point of failure and to sell the alternative to wired ear buds (which will be much easier to lose) than any styling issue they might claim.
