Why doesn't an MTech from IIT get the same respect as an MBA from IIM?

To answer this question in very simple way, we may first establish just two factors on which the quantity of so called "respect" will be determined  for any degree in India.
  1. Salary package: Before applying for any course, majority of the people wish to know about the average salary package which they may get after completing the course. Not only the students, but even other people like relatives, neighbors and friends ask the same question . " Oh Job milgaya? Salary kithna hai? " ( Translation : "did you get the job? how much is the salary?"). The unfortunate thing here is that, most of the people try to value a course just based on the average salary which a student is  going to get after completing that course.
  2. Difficulty level and competition in the entrance exam: Most of the people rate the course on the type of entrance exam. If the number of people who are writing a particular entrance exam are more, then it is almost assumed that it has got high difficulty level and  high competition. So, If a particular course has an entrance exam which has got high competition and difficulty level, then people think of very high regarding that particular course.
The average salary offered for an MBA from IIM is way higher compared to an M.Tech from IIT. ( I am just talking about the average salary. There may be few instances in which M.Tech grads grabbing offers from highly reputed companies like Google, Microsoft etc with very high package. But, the instances are very few).
The number of people who will be writing the CAT exam will also be higher compared to the number of people applying for GATE exam.
So, why doesn't an M.Tech from IIT get the same respect as an MBA from IIM? That is because, here in India, most of the people decide the amount of so called "respect"  just based on these two parameters. One can clearly analyse that, MBA from an IIM has the edge compared to M.Tech from an IIT, in both of the above listed parameters.
But, one should not simply rate the course based on these parameters. It actually based on the particular student's interest. If someone is really interested in technical stuffs and research, then they will obviously choose M.Tech. Many people will be  interested in management side and they choose MBA.
Both IIT and IIM are premier institutes of India. Both have their own brand image. So, its unfortunate to see people deciding the quantity of "respect" based on just few parameter, which they think is the criterion to decide.
At the end, its better to choose the course based on our own interest rather than based on what people think regarding those course . If we get to work on something which we love to do, then that is called as " JOB SATISFACTION". So, MBA or M.Tech? well, it is up to you.
