I can answer this question in a different way. There are engineers who might be working for "no salary" as well.
So, it all depends on only one thing after we finish engineering education and get into an employment - Our level of employ-ability.
What I mean by that, how you can contribute exactly to the cause a company is looking for. If you can, surely you will earn more. And that more could be different across industries and commerce.
So depending on how complete their knowledge is, engineers want to learn and grow. Which is why sometimes they may work for no salary, and slowly get a stipend and with rapid increments get to a better pay figures as well.
And working Day and Night - sometimes is a personal choice and sometimes may be the demand of the industry you are in.
